These bacteria have genes that make them resistant to penicillins and cephalosporins...and sometimes carbapenems. Plus they're often also resistant to aminoglycosides and quinolones.
Extended-spectrum beta-lactamase producers are resistant to penicillins and cephalosporins...but usually susceptible to carbapenems (Primaxin, etc).
