Emphasize Daily Adherence With the New Oral Anticoagulants After Cardioversion
You'll see the new oral anticoagulants (Pradaxa, Xarelto, Eliquis) used in patients with new onset atrial fib undergoing cardioversion.
We know that cardioversion sometimes converts patients back to normal heart rhythm. But it increases the risk of stroke...if an atrial clot is dislodged during the procedure.
That's why anticoagulants are usually given for at least 3 weeks in therapeutic doses before cardioversion...to stabilize clots and decrease the risk of embolism.
