Keep Patients With Dye Allergies Safe
A recent close call will highlight your role in handling allergies to dyes or other color additives.
A child with a known red-dye allergy was getting Rx ibuprofen oral suspension. The stock bottle says the med contains FD&C Yellow #6...initially leading pharmacy staff to believe this was the only color additive in the product.
But the package insert also lists D&C Red #33 as an inactive ingredient. Fortunately this was caught before the Rx was dispensed.
