Educate Patients Not to Rely on Probiotics for Acute Diarrhea and Vomiting
New evidence will lead to controversy over whether to suggest probiotics in patients with acute gastroenteritis.
Some guidelines recommend probiotics for acute infectious diarrhea and vomiting in adults and kids. But this is based on weak data that certain probiotics may shorten diarrhea in kids by about a day.
Now there's strong evidence that treating infants or young kids with 5 days of Lactobacillus GG (Culturelle) does NOT reduce the duration or severity of symptoms.
