Be Alert for Patients Who Need HIV Post-Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP)
More pharmacists will be able to start meds for nonoccupational HIV POST-exposure prophylaxis (PEP)...as a new CA law takes effect in 2020.
PEP is different than PRE-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), where patients with ongoing HIV risks take preventive antiretrovirals long-term.
Access to PEP is key. Antiretrovirals need to be started ASAP, usually no later than 72 hours after exposure...and continued for 28 days.
