Renagel, a new drug to lower serum phosphorus in patients with end-stage renal disease

You'll see Renagel, a new drug to lower serum phosphorus in patients with end-stage renal disease.

Renagel (sevelamer) is a polymer that binds and removes phosphates from the GI tract.

It works as well as calcium acetate (PhosLo)...with a lower risk of hypercalcemia and less constipation.

Most patients take 2-4 caps of Renagel TID with meals.

There are concerns that Renagel might bind other drugs and reduce their absorption. If possible, advise patients to take other meds at least 1 hour before or 3 hours after Renagel.
