unique IV sedative called Precedex (dexmedetomidine)

Abbott will soon market a unique IV sedative called Precedex (dexmedetomidine).

It'll be used as an alternative to midazolam (Versed) and propofol (Diprivan, etc).

Precedex is an alpha-2-adrenergic agonist...in the same class as clonidine. Stimulating these receptors in the CNS causes sedation and reduces anxiety.
